What is different about StellAurator

Most audio software shows a chapter as one long waveform. StellAurator shows it as the manuscript: you read from a teleprompter and each recording lands on its line, where you fix one sentence without hunting for it.

  • Recording. A teleprompter scrolls at your pace, and you stop to reread a sentence and go on.
  • The reading checked. Every take is compared with its line on your computer, and a missing or changed word is marked.
  • Clean-up. Clicks and breaths are found and fixed, and so are hum and background noise; Undo takes any fix back.
  • Casting. Each actor gets their own lines in their own free copy.
  • Score. Music beds and cues sit on the chapter’s timeline.
  • The ACX check. Loudness, peaks, noise floor and file format are measured against ACX’s requirements.
  • Export. One MP3 per chapter for ACX, or one M4B with chapter marks for other stores.

Questions people ask when choosing

What is the best software to record an audiobook?

Anyone who knows audio editing will do every step by hand in Audacity, which is free, or in Reaper. If you want a program built around the book, StellAurator records from the manuscript with a teleprompter and files every take under its line. Each chapter is measured against ACX and exported in its format from the same window.

Is StellAurator an alternative to Audacity for audiobooks?

Yes, for anyone who wants the takes filed under the manuscript. Audacity is a free, general audio editor that runs on Windows and macOS, and on Linux, and many narrators use it. In Audacity a chapter is a waveform; in StellAurator a chapter is its manuscript, with each recording on its line. StellAurator also marks clicks and breaths, hum and background noise under each recording and suggests fixes that Undo takes back, and every chapter is measured against ACX before export. StellAurator runs on Windows alone for now.

Is StellAurator an alternative to Reaper or Adobe Audition for audiobook narration?

Yes. Reaper and Adobe Audition are full digital audio workstations, used for music and film as much as for voice, and both produce an audiobook in skilled hands. StellAurator is narrower, made for one job. It is organized by the manuscript’s lines instead of tracks and regions, and recording and proof listening, the pickups and the ACX check are built into the order an audiobook is made.

How does StellAurator compare with Hindenburg?

Hindenburg makes editors for spoken word, used for podcasts and radio as well as audiobooks, and they run on Windows and macOS. StellAurator is built around the text of the book. You record from the manuscript and each recording is stored on its line, and an actor is sent their own lines alone. StellAurator also has casting, optional computer voices and voice conversion, music beds and cues, and proof listening that ticks off each line as it is heard.

Is it cheaper to make my own audiobook than to hire a narrator?

Yes, in money. At ACX’s planning figures ($200 a finished hour for the narration and $200 for the editing), hiring the production of an 80,000-word novel costs about $3,400, paid to other people. Making it yourself costs your time, a microphone and a quiet room, and a StellAurator plan while you work. Hire a narrator when you do not want to perform the book yourself. See pricing.

Can I use AI narration for Audible?

Not through ACX. ACX requires a human narrator unless ACX has authorized otherwise, and it does not accept computer-generated narration. Other stores set their own rules. StellAurator marks a file that contains computer-generated narration as such; its main use is recording your own voice or working with human actors.

Do I need a DAW to make an audiobook?

No. A DAW is one way to do it. For audiobook work StellAurator takes its place: the recording, the editing of single lines, the clean-up, the leveling, the music and the ACX export all happen in one window.

Is a general audio editor or StellAurator better for a first audiobook?

StellAurator is the easier start: each recording is filed under its line with its suggested fixes, and each chapter is measured against ACX’s requirements before you upload. A general editor gives you more manual control and costs less, or nothing, if you already know how to use it.
