What is StellAurator?

StellAurator is audiobook recording and production software for Windows. Authors and narrators use it to record an audiobook from the manuscript, fix single lines, add music and export chapters in the format Audible’s ACX requires, in one program. Every recording is stored on the line of the manuscript it belongs to.

StellAurator at a glance

  • What it is: Audiobook recording and production software, a desktop application
  • Made for: Authors who narrate or manage their own audiobook, and narrators who want one program for the whole job
  • Runs on: 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. A Mac version is on the way
  • Manuscripts: Word (.docx), PDF, EPUB, plain text (.txt, .md) or pasted text; chapters found at their headings, speakers detected
  • Recording: A teleprompter; a straight read is divided into its lines by the words, on your computer; every take is kept on its line and checked against the script
  • Clean-up: Clicks and pops, breaths, hum, background noise, each found and fixed, every fix with an undo
  • Music: Beds and cues on the chapter timeline from your own sound library, or generated through a service you connect
  • Checking: Loudness, peaks, noise floor and file format measured against ACX’s requirements
  • Export: One MP3 per chapter in ACX’s format, or one M4B with chapter marks; WAV or FLAC masters
  • Voices: 26 built-in English computer voices that run offline; optional voice services under your own account
  • Actors: Each invited actor records in a free copy that shows only their lines

What StellAurator does

A book goes from manuscript to finished audiobook files in one window, and your progress is saved as you go.

  • Bring in your manuscript: a Word file, a PDF, an EPUB or plain text. Chapters are found at their headings and each line gets a speaker, which you review.
  • Cast it: each character gets a voice and a portrait, and you invite actors for any part.
  • Record: read from the teleprompter at your pace; each recording is filed under its line.
  • Clean up: fixes are suggested for each recording and applied as layers you can undo; the original is never modified.
  • Score: place music beds and cues on the chapter’s timeline.
  • Finish: Diagnose, Plan, Apply, Check, then Export, over a chapter or the whole book.
  • Listen and save: proof listen line by line, mark the pickups and export the finished files.

Every part is described on the studio page, and shown in the demos.

What StellAurator does not do

StellAurator does not:

  • Run on a Mac or a phone yet.
  • Import RTF or older .doc manuscripts, or read a PDF that is only pictures of pages (a scan).
  • Distribute or publish your audiobook: you upload the files to ACX or another store yourself.
  • Make a computer-voiced book that ACX accepts: ACX requires human narration unless it has authorized otherwise.
  • Remove room echo, or a sound under your voice, after recording.
  • Generate opening and closing credits, or pick the retail sample for you.
  • Ship music or sound effects: you bring your own or generate them through a service you connect.
